City College's quest for a fourth-consecutive state football title is underway.

The Rams invaded Aptos on Sept. 14 to face the Cabrillo Seahawks at Carl Conelly Stadium for the first game of 2002 season.

Although Seahawk fans were expecting to see a better team with a far better outcome from last year's 48-0 thumping, the national champs still came away with a 24-14 victory.

Rams' kicker Danius Ghoddoussi started the scoring with a 25-yard field goal putting the Rams on the board early in the first quarter, 3-0.

However, the Seahawks responded by taking advantage of the Rams' defensive woes. Early in the second quarter the Seahawks got on the board when quarterback Nick Noce delivered an 11-yard pass to receiver Nick Pollard for a touchdown and giving the home team, a 7-3 lead.

The Rams started to struggle offensively by committing unforced errors and being flagged for penalties. Coach Rush responded by inserting Jason Swanson as quarterback who then picked-up 15-yards on an end run and putting the Rams in a scoring position on the five-yard line with 1:53 left in the second quarter.

The Rams eventually scored with 45 seconds left when running back Jeremy Lindsey dashed for two-yards giving the Rams a 10-7 lead at halftime.

Rams to Break National Record in Home Opener
The Rams are just about to break a 40-year national record: the most consecutive wins in Junior College History. The record of 38 belongs to Boise College and City College football team had just tied this number last Friday, after beating West Valley College 59-0.

The last time the Rams lost a game was back in 1998 in the state final against Palomar College.

Since that, the Rams have gone undefeated 38 games, winning 3 consecutive state titles. The Rams can take solo possesion of this record if the beat San Jose City College on Saturday, September 28 at the Ram Stadium. The game starts at 1 p.m.

At halftime Coach Rush expressed some concern. "We can have a game with five or six turnovers and 8.000 penalties."

The third quarter proved disastrous for the Rams. Late in the quarter they lost possession fumbling the ball with 11:33 left. However, the home team failed to capitalize on the turnover.

Once again the Rams could not maintain possession for long. Quarterback Swanson threw a pass that was intercepted by the Seahawks' Travis Breeding on the 38-yard line. Then, two consecutive penalties, one pass interference and one holding, put the Seahawks in a scoring position on the seven-yard line. Cabrillo running back Pollard plowed his way to the one-yard line and he eventually scored on the follow running play with 7:22 left in the third quarter. The Seahawks took the lead 14-10, giving their fans plenty to cheer about.

The Rams didn't respond until the final quarter when running back Cameron Roberts scampered three yards to score a touchdown with 14:39 left and giving the Rams a 17-14 lead.

At this point the Sea-hawks seemed to loose the momentum. A weak offensive line resulted in several sackings of QBNoce.

Meanwhile, the Rams stepped up the pressure by striking for pay dirt on a three-yard pass from Swanson to receiver Deqawn Mobley. The Rams surged to a commanding 24-14 lead.

With 2:05 left in the game Rams' kicker Ghoddoussi had a chance to increase their lead, but his 22-yard attempt hit the post and the scored stayed at 24-14.

"I am so proud of my defense. They played awesome, but we can't win games without scoring points especially against teams like the Rams. We can take only positive things of tonight's game because the Rams are the number one team in the nation," said Seahawks quarterback Noce.

"We had three out of four things tonight. We played hard; we played fast, but we gave away two touchdowns," said coach Rush. "I think we played very good defensively in the first half and then in the second half the offense stepped up, doing a really good job."

Added coach Rush: "I'm not worried about quarterback Swanson because he hasn't played for the past two years. For a first game he had some good throwing and unfortunately two interceptions."
