RAMS FOOTBALL WINS SEASON OPENER AT HOME BY ARTURO BURGOS
The Rams opened its first home game of the football season with a 48-17 victory over Cabrillo. The team played an excellent game in all areas. Offense and defense came together nicely, secondary coach Malik Jackson said. The offense started the game by moving the ball without much resistance on their opening drive. The defense followed up on their offensive mates with just as equal ease. The special teams weren’t able to match the offense: they allowed a nice runback from the opposition. On their next possession, they ran back a fake punt for a touchdown. The game overall was not much of a contest as The Rams were in complete control throughout the afternoon. The offense slowed down a bit due to a few adjustments from the opposition. “We figured how they were blocking us, so once we figured that out, we were good,” Jackson said. The offense was able to adjust and move the ball methodically and successfully in the second half. The defense remained dominant, not allowing any points in the second half. “We were going off what they were giving us in the second half, but it is our second game so as the season goes on things will click better,” offensive line coach Taleni Lepolo said. The Rams' coaches were very pleased with their first home victory of the season. They felt the support from the crowd and were happy to begin the season with a win. Skyline College beat City College 4-0 Tuesday at Balboa Park. The game was fast-paced and hard fought despite the warm weather. Skyline dominated the ball and kept the Lady Rams on the defensive. Skyline scored three goals in the first half and almost added two more. Sophomore forward Cynthia Martinez scored three goals and Simone Torres, a freshman from Burlingame, scored the other goal. The team continued to pressure the Rams throughout the afternoon and won possessions. Facing a 3-0 deficit at the half, the Rams’ coach said, “I don’t care what happens – make decisions,” referring to the team’s lack of aggressiveness. The Rams responded by allowing only one goal in the second half and keeping the ball past midfield more often. The Rams’ best shot on goal came late in the first half with a penalty kick that clanged loudly off the right goalpost. Skyline, which has placed no lower than sixth in the 14-team Coast Conference in the last four years, now holds a 2-1-1 record. The Rams’ next match is at Santa Cruz against Cabrillo College on Sept. 14 at 3 p.m. E-mail: sports@theguardsman.com |
