Rams Soccer Make Statement Win Against Cypress College
The women’s soccer team defeated the Southern California powerhouse 2-0.
On another sunny Sunday afternoon, the Rams defeated three-time state champion Cypress College. The Rams defended home turf in a highly-anticipated match, as Cypress had emerged victorious versus City last season 2-1.
Both teams entered the match undefeated, Cypress with three wins and a draw, while City College also sported three wins of their own. Additionally, neither team had conceded a goal going into the game.
Fans of both squads floated in and out of the stands to enjoy this battle between California heavyweights. The crowd cheered when big plays occurred, but they were otherwise quite demure, allowing the players and coaches to execute their game plans.
Sophomore forward Abigael Zennadi netted two goals in the match. She attributed her success to a collective effort by all.
“We knew we had to win this game, so I feel that everyone did whatever they could to keep our energy up, whether that was throwing their body in front of the ball or being encouraging throughout the game,” said Zennadi.
Sophomore Gabriela Jackson said that although she was panicked on the ball at times, the team worked hard to overcome their anxiety and trust each other. She said that she could still work on her fitness, especially on a day in which the sun beamed down on the turf with a ferocity that made it feel much hotter than 67 degrees Fahrenheit.
“Our team effort pushed until the final whistle,” Sophomore Luz Hernandez said. “Even though we weren’t completing the passes we wanted in the first half, we knew we had to keep pushing in the second half to get another goal.”
“We held our defense strong and maintained [organization] and [played] aggressive. At the end, we took advantage of a counterattack. I was really happy I was able to contribute to get the goal and help my team win,”
Head Coach Jeff Wilson provided a similar assessment of the match. “I was really impressed with our effort. We were able to match their physicality and took advantage of the few moments we were able to penetrate their strong defense that hadn’t allowed a goal all season going into our match.”
“Playing against a powerhouse program like Cypress always provides a measuring stick of where your team is at and today we showed we are up to the challenge,” said Wilson.
