After a rout last Tuesday away against Cabrillo College, the Rams kept their momentum as they bulldozed their way to a 7-0 win against the Foothill College Owls Friday, taking their season record to 8-0-2.

From the beginning, City College looked as if they had it figured out. The offense showed dominance throughout the game and didn’t let their foot off the gas until the final whistle. An overall total of 19 shots on goal and six assists helped elevate the team to this victory.

“I felt confident. I think we’ve played well all season,” said coach Jeff Wilson, speaking on his thoughts coming into this game. “I think the thing that I always remind them is to not let our heart down.”

The Rams defense also played well. Freshman goalkeeper Mariah Flores had two saves, keeping Foothill College from scoring, while City College intercepted the ball several times and made more advances toward their goal.

Freshman forward Chemnui Simpson played hard through the first half, scoring two goals within the first 12 minutes of the game and with four shots on goal. She often dribbled past defenders while making several advances toward goal.

“I thought it was good. This is my first game back after hurting my hamstring a little bit,” Simpson said. “So I felt good and I was happy with the goals.” She added that she suffered the hamstring injury “two or three weeks ago.”

She also said that the team connected “really well” and that they hit “a kind of flow,” adding that every game “we’re building and building, getting better and better.”

“I think it was definitely pretty good. Our team kept it consistent throughout the whole game,” said sophomore defender and team captain Kalea Dwelle, who scored in the 47th minute. “Even after small mistakes we make, we were just hustling to get them back, and I think that’s really what makes our team special.”

In the first half, forwards Abigael Zennadi and Simpson maintained possession of the ball early on, putting pressure on the Owls defense. City College scored their first goal in the ninth minute. Simpson scored with an assist from midfielder sophomore Luz Hernandez. In the 12th minute, Hernandez passed the ball towards Simpson in an open Foothill pitch, bringing a clear advance towards goal, pushing the score to 2-0. It was followed by a third goal five minutes later by Hernandez, off a corner kick from freshman midfielder Mireya Valle, bumping the score to 3-0.

In the 26th minute, Valle slid past the Owls defenders as they made attempts to gain possession. Valle passed the ball to Hernandez, leaving space for a 4-0 lead.

Immediately two minutes after the start of the second half, Dwelle took a shot near the center of the pitch, and the ball struck the crossbar and bounced its way in. This was followed by a goal from midfielder Kimberly Rubio in the 67th minute, putting City College ahead 6-0. City College finished the match 7-0 with a goal from Rhiana Gardon. City College has thrashed the competition, only conceding one goal so far this season.

“We just look like we’re starting to get back to ourselves,” said Wilson
